Yesterday I visited Kungsängen (Kings Meadow) just outside Uppsala where these flowers are growing wild and have been since Carl Linnés time. A popular myth is that the snake's head fritillary is growing on the meadow since a battle between the Swedes and the Danes. The battle ended with a great victory for the Swedes. For each of the Danes that died in the battle there is a red/purple snake's head and for each dead Swede there is a white. That is why the white snake's head are so few and rare.
